Most two-dimensional pieces originate as a coherent concept while others begin as an isolated image, around which a psychological system is developed. Often times, extensive research is required to accurately depict the subjects and objects in my work such as star charts, or specific species' markings/proportions. Once the sketch is adequate, I proceed to transfer the image to either canvas or paper using an assortment of rulers, compasses, and freehand technique. From there, application of either color pencil or oil follows. Occasionally, unanticipated elements manifest which force design changes in the original layout or color scheme (often resulting in serendipitous alterations.
Some of my sketches evolve into three-dimensional clay interpretations from which plaster molds are made for the production of paper pulp casts. These castings are affixed to a mounting board and prepared with gesso. Generally, my sculptures are an exploration of object, surface, and color; unlike my paintings and illustrations which tend to be an exploration of image relation/contrasts and dynamic perspective points. However, both exhibit common elements such as bold use of colors and their complementaries, postmodern subject matter, and stylized execution (i.e. retaining that folkloric, cartoonish quality from my childhood stimulus).
